Get and Keep Your Horse’s Attention

To have a safe, satisfying experience, know horses, know yourself, and develop a willing attitude in your horse.

Although horses respond best to a very consistent style of handling, they should not lead an existence so routine that it is boring and predictable. I’ve seen some horse owners who are so careful to do things the same way every single time to be consistent (which is usually good), they have inadvertently insulated their horse from the unpredictable world (which is limiting). We have a saying around our place when we see a horse get complacent or think he’s a mind reader and begins anticipating: we say, “Let’s mix it up.”

Horses need a variety of experiences to make them well-rounded individuals. The more settings and situations they are exposed to in a positive, nonthreatening way, the more easily they will adapt to new experiences. Variety leads to self-confidence.
